Map of startups with priority verticals for investments in Ukraine

November 29, 2022

TA Ventures, together with the Ukrainian Startup Fund and the Ministry of Digital Transformation, present a map of startups with priority verticals that will help rebuild Ukraine and the Ukrainian economy.

The startup map contains the most important and critically needed sectors that need attention today – for the development of Ukraine now and in the post-war period. TA Ventures team identified and argued them based on its more than ten years of investment experience, in-depth knowledge of the European and US markets, and understanding of how these problems are solved abroad.

“We have collected those verticals worth investing in to make our country economically autonomous. In particular, today, we see a shift in focus to the sectors of military tech, security, deep tech, agro-food tech, and biotech. Startups that automate various processes in the Ukrainian economy, such as logistics and pharmacy, are also important. Now more than ever, it is important to invest in startups that will be useful for rebuilding the Ukrainian economy. Therefore, our map will help existing and new startups to understand which verticals need to be developed and which will be given priority when issuing grants in the future,” says Viktoriya Tigipko, Founder and Managing Partner of TA Ventures.

“Our goal in this research is to show Ukrainian entrepreneurs which technological areas today have the most prospects and potential in terms of opportunities to create a quality product and build a successful company. Now we see that Ukraine has every chance to build a new powerful military tech industry and become one of the world leaders in this field. So we have to develop it together,” said Oleksandr Bornyakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation for IT Development.

“Despite the war, most Ukrainian startups remain in Ukraine to be useful to the country. IT business and technology startups have become almost the main driver of the Ukrainian economy and investment activity in wartime. According to the results of nine months of 2022, the industry showed an increase of 13%, and the market volume amounted to almost $5.5 billion. Every day, more innovative tech solutions bring victory closer and will be needed in the post-war recovery period. This is what we should focus on and develop the critical sectors of Ukraine in this difficult time. The map of priority areas for investment will give startups an understanding of where to focus their efforts to help the country. These are the sectors that are now a priority for us and, moreover, the priority needs for the state,” comments Pavlo Kartashov, CEO of USF.

Among the priority sectors collected in the map, in particular:

1. Construction technology, housing and communal services
2. Logistics Tech, Export and Import
3. AgTech, FoodTech
4. Technologies in the education field (Ed Tech)
5. Employment
6. Social sphere
7. Digital health
8. Financial Technologies
9. Energy Management / Sustainable Development / Renewable Energy
10. Cybersecurity
11. Military technology

The Ministry of Digital Transformation was established in September 2019. Its goal is to turn Ukraine into a digital state. The key project of the Ministry is the Diia ecosystem, which consists of a mobile application, portal and other services. In Diia, the Ministry of Digital Transformation launched the world’s first digital passport, a complete analogue of a regular one, the fastest business registration, a comprehensive service for parents, eBay and many other services. Another important project is Diia.City — a unique legal and tax space for IT companies. After the full-scale invasion of Russia, the Ministry of Digital Transformation is waging the world’s first digital war against the aggressor.
